US Registered Nurse Education

U.S Registered Nurse Education

There is a surge in demand for qualified registered nurses or RNs. Since there is an increasing shortage in skilled staff, there is a growing need for skilled RNs in various hospitals, medical centers and nursing homes. If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, find out what is involved to get a US registered nurse education.

What does an RN do?
RN stands for registered nurse and he or she usually supervises an LPN. Thus, the scope of gamut of responsibilities for an RN is much more compared to an LPN. The pay scale is also much higher for an RN.

How to apply
Whether you are a foreigner interested in pursuing a Registered Nursing degree course here or a local American, the process of admission to nursing degree programs remains the same whether it is for an ASN, BSN or MSN degree program. You will need to download the application form from the university website or get the form by visiting the university in person. Then complete the form and send it in along with the admission fee to the mailing address within the scheduled date. Usually, the last date for submission of forms is 1st March for the fall admissions and is 30th September for the spring admission. All criteria should be verified before submission of forms as any breach will result in cancellation of admission.

The pay scale of an RN
An RN earns almost double the salary of a regular LPN or LVN. While an LPN can hope to expect a salary of around 49000 in a year, an RN would get around 82 or 92000 in a year! This is why so many existing LPNs aspire to extend their degrees to incorporate an RN degree as well.

Foreign RNs in demand
Recently, a new trend seen in the US is rapid hiring of foreign qualified RNs. If you are not living in the US and wish to pursue a US registered nurse education this could not have come at a better time! Hospitals and medical centers are busy recruiting foreign RNs because of the cost effectiveness of such persons. A US hospital can easily hire many RNs for a much lower salary compared to an American RN. In addition, in the US, there are not too many skilled personnel when it comes to the RN segment.

Submission of credits
One of the things, which you need to do, is to submit credits if you wish to apply for an RN position in a hospital or medical center. These credits show your previous working experience as an RN. In addition to submitting credits you would need to appear in SAT or ACT examinations. The completed and submitted application package needs to be inclusive of application form, SAT scorecard, credits etc. If you are a foreigner applying for an RN position, you will also need to take the license US exam, which certifies you to be able to work in any medical clinic or hospital.
