How to get started The first thing you need to do is to get the requisite permissions from the respective authorities. You would also need to be a member of a national organization in the sphere of LPN. In other words, your school should be accredited to a nationally recognized organization. These include institutions such as Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the League of Nursing Accrediting Commission etc. If your school is not a member of such institutions or does not have requisite permissions and licenses, you will be providing unrecognized certifications to the students. A typical LPN will perform a gamut of roles ranging from administration of IVs, monitoring of pulse rate, respiratory rates, vital signs etc., ensuring the personal hygiene of the patient, turning over patients to prevent bedsores etc. Many LPNs are also involved in maternity care, delivery of babies, feeding and caring for the newborns etc. Thus, all of this training can only be imparted via practical lessons. Your school should also have dedicated laboratories, where such practical sessions can be conducted. The equipment stored in these labs should also be state of the art. Placement opportunities Most LPN students today opt for schools, which offer them placements once the degree is over. If you want to succeed in this tough competition, you need to have partnerships with recognized and leading hospitals, medical centers and nursing homes. This way, the LPN students with the best grades will be immediately absorbed by these hospitals and medical clinics. Most LPNs also prefer interning for an additional year after their course, to become more proficient at their job. If a student wishes to intern for an extra year, your school should provide such facilities. LPN to RN Your school should also have the provision for students to extend their degrees from LPN to RN or even an APN degree. Placement opportunities, syllabus and internship facilities should be inclusive of RN and APN criteria. |
